Maps and Graphs With Miss Melberry is intended for use with children in grades 2 through 6. For the youngest students, begin with Picture Maps and Picture Graphs. Introduce more challenging types of maps and graphs and more difficult levels when appropriate. In Level 1, Miss Melberry presents simple picture maps which show clearly that a map is in essence a small picture of the things around us. Students learn to recognize and find things on a map, to compare distances, and to refer to a compass rose to determine direction. During each work session, a student will view 4 maps and will answer 10 questions. In all, there are 18 different maps and 135 questions in Level 1.

In Level 2, there are 30 Mall Maps, Street Maps, and Road Maps which place greater emphasis on using a map key and scale of miles. Significant practice is also provided for determining direction.

In Maps, Level 3, Miss Melberry presents actual Road Maps, Historic Site Maps, and National Park Maps along with a variety of Weather Maps...90 maps in all. Students use map keys, the compass rose, and scale of miles to assist their logic and problem solving skills as they read and navigate for answers.

At Level 4, students are given an added challenge. They are first presented with a question along with multiple choice answers. The student must then find the answer by referring to one or more of 8 available U.S. maps. The students have access to a Regions Map, Latitude and Longitude Map, Time Zone Map, Major Cities Map, Relief Map, Geopolitical Map, and more. Use the Select Map button or choose specific maps by clicking on the books on the projector cart. Three of the maps are larger than the screen. Students may zoom in and out and scroll up and down or left and right to locate positions. Students advance their map reading skills and greatly exercise their reference skills and independent problem solving skills.

110 GRAPHS

Picture Graphs
Bar Graphs
Circle Graphs
Line Graphs
Double Bar Graphs

When working on graphs, teachers may set the options to include one or more types of graphs: Picture Graphs, Bar Graphs, Circle Graphs, Line Graphs, and/or Double Bar Graphs. Also, when selecting Bar, Circle, and Line Graphs, you may select either Level 1 or Level 2.

The graphs and questions at Level 1 will be simpler and targeted at basic graph reading. Also, numbers used will be small (e.g., 1-10) and usually stepped by 1. At Level 2, larger numbers will be used, and units may be stepped by 5, 10, 50, 100, etc. A calculator is available from the menu bar if a student finds it helpful.

For all 110 graphs, the data is pulled from controlled variables at random. Therefore, though a student will likely see a specific graph more than one time, and may even have the same question repeated, it will be with different numbers. The bars, lines, and pie segments will also be different. It will not be possible to associate a specific answer with a given question. Varying data requires that a graph be read carefully even when a student “already had that one”.
